Who knew that in a trial that captured the nation’s attention for all of the year, 2013, that it would end in an unsatisfying cliffhanger? Will there be justice? Will there be peace for the family and friends of Travis Alexander? Will we ever learn the truth?
The guilty verdict…first degree, premeditated murder, was a victory, when you compare this trial, to other high profile cases. Ones that involved young, attractive women, who were accused of unthinkable crimes. Trials stacked with mountains of evidence. Crimes against people, that they professed to love! Had this trial, ended with a unanimous verdict and a sentencing, I suspect that after the air cleared, the nation would have still been unsatisfied…we need to know the truth!
“…I wasn’t there…two masked intruders did it…it was self defense…I miscarried his baby, and he was cold and callous about it…we were reenacting his favorite scene from the movie Psycho and things got out of hand…a sudden, crime of passion…she simply snapped…she was insane…”
Despite the numerous stories she has told or that were told on her behalf, Arias has told us repeatedly that Travis deserved to die. If you can revisit those early days, back in March when Arias first took the stand, she told us how boyfriends are supposed to behave. They sweep her off of her feet. Then they become her “Prince- charming-like- hero!” Then… they cheat!
Next, she goes to elaborate and ingenious lengths (Einsteinian-like) to out their pathetic, behavior. She throws their misdeeds in their face…and sometimes, in the faces of their current girlfriends. She then resorts to hysterics, cries and wails, considers suicide and then after reflecting for a few seconds, she decides to take them back.
They may have moved on, or taken up with someone else, but to Arias, SHE was the one who decided when they would break up…even if SHE had moved on. She called them friends, but the reality is, to Arias, a boyfriend is someone she POSSESSES, FOREVER. Long after they parted. Forever her PUPPET…to do HER bidding, how and when, she sees fit.
Picture the sight of Jodi Arias, Darryl Brewer, and Matt McCartney, siting around the breakfast table, that early June morning, back in 2008. I’m implying or insinuating… nothing…Just imagine the sight of two of her living, ex-boyfriends chatting away, as Arias has already begun her well-thought-out-plan to murder the noncompliant Travis Alexander.
Darryl Brewer testified on behalf of Arias, and was willing to plead for her life, if called upon. We would learn that it was McCartney , who was the intended target, of the “secret, coded, magazine messages.” We expected McCartney to testify, we even heard Martinez, mention McCartney, to Arias, more than once, almost in a taunting, manner…”As the man who would never betray you, right?”
It was no surprise that Arias, even in her allocution, misrepresented the reason, that her childhood friend was not there, to speak on her behalf. She and her child were “run out of town” apparently due to (eye roll) threats on their lives….
“…and if I am elected … to be the Maricopa County…Junior High School … Class President… I will instantly end world hunger and bring about…immediate, world peace….”
Arias’s allocution did read more like a poorly, researched, class essay, than a woman, begging for her life. She can grow hair and trace and copy other’s art work. She would implement a recycling program, in a prison that already has one. She would teach Spanish, in a predominantly, Spanish-speaking population. Start a book club, (Oh, there we go, with the “book clubs,” again!) in a prison that not only has several but this high school drop out arrogantly implies that her cellmates will surely benefit from her presence and vast, knowledge and talents.
She was not charged with forgery, for attempting to introduce to the court, her poor tracing talent, when it was discovered that she forged letters, that were supposedly written by Travis Alexander, “confessing his attraction to children.” She also dropped “aspiring photographer.” No need to remind the jury, that it was her own photographs, that helped convict her. She also told that jury that…thanks to them, she will never paint another oil painting, become a mother or celebrate holidays or milestones, with her family. No need to remind the jury that she elected to separate herself, from her family, for the past fifteen years, and has never once acknowledged any of them, in the courtroom. She pointed vaguely in their general direction, when she spoke of them, but one would have to wonder, could she even pick out any of them in a line up if she had too? She also, revealed that it was her mother who pointed out to her how much suffering she had caused the Alexander family. She took a swipe, at Samantha, who stated in her heart-wrenching, impact statement, that TRAVIS, was the glue that held the family, together. Arias, couldn’t resist, correcting her! She pointed out that the grandmother had been in frail health before she murdered Travis and that he felt that his grandmother was the glue, that held the family together. Even when she was “pleading for her life” she couldn’t resist getting her digs in.
As she held up the t-shirts, that she is hawking on line…SURVIVOR… she lied, again! Stating that one hundred percent, of the proceeds, goes to charity. She told the jury, that “some people” (them)… may not believe that she is a survivor of domestic abuse but here is the proof!
More than anything, it reminded all of us, that if you put a weapon in her hand, she will emerge victorious…she will emerge the survivor!
Those of us who couldn’t always watch the trial live, had to be subjected to the likes of Jinka (Jean Casarez) misinforming us throughout the trial. During the jury deliberations from her vantage point, of sitting right outside the deliberation room, she regaled us with stories of acrimony and strife, among the jurors. She fixed on a female juror, who she believed looked like Jodi Arias’s mother. She reported “damning evidence” that this juror was the” holdout” through every phase by telling us that this woman walked with a” sturdy gait,” was seen looking “determined” and even “wiped her brow,” at one point!
Turns out, Jinka was wrong. This woman was not a hold out. Although Ms. Allen-Cougan, didn’t find it easy to come to every decision she had to make, she felt the prosecution, proved it’s case and also voted for death. All of the jurors (and alternates) who have spoken up, found it difficult to reconcile that this woman, Arias, committed this cold-blooded murder. The jurors were a little taken aback by Arias’s post verdict interview. They felt the police interrogation tapes were very enlightening, particularly the one of her parents. The only juror, who voted for life, to come forward, so far, is the jury foreman, Zervakos. He, in the hours between the mistrial and his early morning interview, concluded that the media had “crucified” Arias.
“It was a brutal no-win situation. … I think that’s kind of unfair, We’re not lawyers. We can’t interpret the law.”
Zervakos’s son, felt compelled to come forward and defend his father’s verdict and statements. My own personal belief is, that if a decision is based on solid and sound reasoning, no defense is necessary.
There were some advantages to watching the trial on HLN. We got to hear from many of Travis’s friends, Skye and Chris Hughes, his twin brothers, David and Micheal Hughes, Dave Hall, Elisha Schabel, Tyler Farnsworth, Deanna Reid and the man who once dated Arias…Abe Abdelhadi. Their first impressions, their suspicions and their conversations with Travis Alexander. We learned that she stalked Alexander, relentlessly!!! Crawling through the doggie door to gain access, to his home. She hid in his closet when he went on dates. She followed him and his dates. She appeared at functions and parties, that she knew Alexander would attend. She would appear and introduce herself as Alexander’s girlfriend, despite his denials. She would wake the household by running the vacuum cleaner, in the middle of the night. Her story, was that Alexander paid her, to clean his home. Yes, her urge for cleaning, was what prompted her middle of the night visits. She slashed Alexander’s tires. She stalked the women, she believed he was dating, and slashed their tires, too. She was once found hiding behind the Christmas tree in Alexander’s home. Just a reminder… these are just instances, that he was aware of. When Arias attended Alexander’s memorial service, many mentioned that she behaved like the grieving widow, a strangely smiling widow. She greeted all the guests and asked them to sign a prepared, photo album she brought watching, as each one signed. The Alexander family never received this album.
As the verdict loomed and a guilty verdict appeared inevitable, more people stepped forward willing to share their stories. A woman, named “Veronica,” called the HLN evening line-up, several times. She claimed to be a coworker of Arias, during her early relationship, with Alexander. She said she tried often to reason with Arias regarding this relationship but Arias was unwavering. She said Arias wasn’t just obsessed, she appeared consumed by him. Perhaps, she wanted to become Alexander? She was going to marry Alexander, have his babies and if she couldn’t locate him anytime she called, she would hop in her car and go. Whether her shift was over or not. It didn’t matter to her that it was 11:00 pm and she was scheduled the next day…Arias hit the road and began the five hour trek, to Mesa! The same route she took when she went to kill him! Same stretch of desert at night…not worrying then about running out of gas or getting lost in the desert.
Another woman, who wanted to only be know as, “Debbie,” said that her daughter “Ashley,” met Arias in October, 2006. Later in January, 2007, when Arias claimed that Brewer, “left her high and dry”…Ashley moved into Arias’s home, to help out with expenses. Ashley found it extremely troubling that Arias had a constant and steady stream of men in and out of her bedroom, at all hours. When these men would show up, Arias would order Ashley to her room, and tell her to shut the door. Ashley could clearly hear them, having sex. Arias would call these encounters “bible studies.” Ashley lasted all of three weeks, living with Arias but as many do, she found it difficult to extricate herself from Arias. Debbie had to step in and threaten Arias with a restraining order, in order to get Arias, to leave her daughter, alone. The same Arias that was trying to woo Alexander!! (Ashley met Alexander, as he visited, too) The same Arias, that wanted the world to know that, she wasn’t promiscuous!
There is a thought that keeps nagging me…the stories of Arias’s “mangled finger.” We heard many different stories, at many different times about that hurt finger. Cut on broken glass, cut on a piece of metal, Travis kicked it and broke it…more than likely, it may have been damaged, (if it was damaged at all) when the knife she used to kill Travis, slipped on his blood and cut HER. Remember during the police interrogation tapes, when she showed, Detective Flores, her “hurt finger?” It was a month after the crime. Deep wounds to the finger…deep enough to sever tendons and nerves, can take a long time to heal, due to constant motion and immersion in water. Flores saw nothing! As I watched an episode of Dr Drew the other night…Dr Drew, the internist… said that an injury such as she was describing and with the effects she was TRYING to demonstrate…would be caused by a pulling motion, NOT a break!!
Then I remembered the missing engagement ring…the one Travis bought for another woman and it turned up missing. Many people believed that Arias, stole this ring. It occurred to me what if…Arias showed up wearing this ring and Travis ripped it from her finger?
Perhaps, he caused no physical damage but to Arias his removal of the ring perhaps roughly, along with the words he may have uttered, caused Arias to keep insisting that this finger…ring-less…is damaged!
Even killing him didn’t satisfy her hatred of him. She sent an e-mail to Travis after killing him, to “prove” that she didn’t kill him, or “know” that he was dead. Even then, it was stalker-ish, and unsettling. “Believing” that he was romancing another woman, in Cancun, Arias “told him” that she would come visit him (his home?) while he was in Cancun, SLEEP in his bed and eat his oatmeal. To quote the brilliant, Juan Martinez…”Who DOES that?”
If the truth could ever be wrangled from Arias. She would admit that the trial and the last five months were the happiest…the BEST time of her life! Able to tell the world her story her way and relive the time with Travis Alexander and how important she was in his life. Even if the only significant thing she managed in his life, was murdering him. She has been ecstatic!!! Knowing that she could get to do it all over again, rethinking and improving…she is chomping at the bit!! I know it has occurred to Juan Martinez, and I hope he can convince the Alexander family that it would be best…and much as I would hate to miss it, it really should occur, this way.
No cameras in the courtroom, NO Alexander family to torture…they have done their part! Without the audience she craves, the Alexander’s to torture, this trial would not have been fun. She would feel deprived of the one thing she craves and her FURY would be unleashed, for the jury to see. What they need to see, in order to sentence her to death. All the jurors who have stepped forward, regardless of how they voted, have said the same thing. They found it hard to reconcile this “frail, soft-spoken” woman, with the murderer, they knew she was. Martinez needs to show this new jury the beast. Just one glimpse would do it. I hope the Alexanders, see it that way!! Not that she would likely ever be put to death. As laws change over the years and sentences are commuted, without thought for the individual, who committed the crime, Arias needs to spend the rest of her life, locked away. Minimal contact, with human beings. Steven Alexander needs to sleep, peacefully, without fearing, that “someone” is chasing him, or his family…with a knife!
Despite Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s “cracking down” on Arias the tweets, continue. This week she has chosen, one of our nation’s treasures to help her continue her reign of torture and terror on the Alexander family. One that shows both her arrogance and perhaps, a threat:
“When you learn, teach.
When you get, give.”
- Maya Angelou
I only wish Travis Alexander had been familiar with Maya Angelou. Or, that he had heeded, at least one of her nuggets of wisdom. One, we all could benefit from:
“When someone shows you who they are,
believe them the first time.”
- Maya Angelou
Right back at you, Arias. Right back AT YOU!!!
